There’s no question that the birth of Enigma, in 1990, changed the musical landscape. Enigma mastermind Michael Cretu set trends instead of following them. Gathering sounds from cultures on every continent and from many different eras, Cretu made Enigma into a musical Noah’s Arc. Enigma—true to its name—became an ever-changing entity, able to continuously reinvent itself. Enigma’s sixth album, A Posteriori (Latin for “what comes after”, meaning perhaps, “something gleaned from experience”) transports listeners to a transcendent new sonic world of magic and mysticism that confirms the existence of a place between heaven and earth, body and soul, and reason and intuition. Together Enigma’s five albums—MCMXC A.D. (1990), THE CROSS OF CHANGES (1993), LE ROI EST MORT, VIVE LE ROI (1996), THE SCREEN BEHIND THE MIRROR (2000) and VOYAGEUR (2003) - have sold 30 million copies worldwide. With more than 50 number one hits in various international charts, Enigma is the most successful German pop export of all time. Enigma’s first single, “Sadness Part 1” became a hit all over the world and united generations of music lovers. It reached the top 10 in 24 countries. The accompanying debut album, MCMXC A.D. stayed on the American Billboard chart for more than five years.
